PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIA After managing a restaurant in the Mission district of San Francisco for years, Blake and Emma Read decided that Sydney is ready, even hungry, for this kind of food. What kind of food? Healthy, traditional, San Fran style burritos, quesadillas and tortillas. Moving away from the tacky, loud, “tequila” idea of Mexican food, this beachside taqueria has a colourfully tasteful interior and opens out onto water views of North Bondi. (It also has a surfcam on the roof, apparently surfing and tacos go together like tequila and hangovers).
The food itself is cheap and satisfying, with vegetarian, fish and gluten-free options on offer. The taco salad is a fun twist on a healthy choice, served in an edible taco bowl. Specialty burritos include chipotle chicken, tempura fish, lime and garlic prawns and green chilli roasted pig. The restaurant is casual which fits perfectly with Mexican cuisine (“it’s peasant food, like pasta for Italians”) so there is plastic crockery and a no-fuss attitude. In the summer it has a beachy, fun vibe helped along by BYO wine and a selection of beers, tequilas, and frozen margaritas.
